A cluttered closet can make getting dressed feel overwhelming, but an organized wardrobe? That’s a game-changer. When everything has its place, you not only save time but also rediscover pieces you’ve forgotten about. For me, organizing my closet by item and then by color has completely transformed how I approach my wardrobe—and it can for you too! Here’s a step-by-step guide to turn your closet chaos into closet goals:

Step 1: Start with a Clean Slate

Before you can organize, you need to declutter.

Take Everything Out: Lay out all your clothes where you can see them. This helps you assess what you have.

Sort Into Piles: Create categories like “Keep,” “Donate,” and “Maybe.” Be honest—if you haven’t worn it in a year or it doesn’t fit your style anymore, it’s time to let it go.

Pro Tip: For seasonal pieces, consider storing them separately to free up space for current items.

Step 2: Categorize by Item

The first step to a visually pleasing and functional closet is grouping similar items together.

Categories to Consider:

• Tops (e.g., blouses, T-shirts, tank tops)

• Bottoms (e.g., jeans, trousers, skirts)

• Dresses

• Outerwear

• Shoes

• Accessories (e.g., scarves, belts)

Grouping by type makes it easier to find what you’re looking for and keeps everything neat.

Step 3: Organize by Color

Once your items are categorized, it’s time to add the magic touch: color coordination.

Why It Works: A color-organized closet is not only aesthetically pleasing but also makes it easier to mix and match outfits.

How to Do It:

• Arrange items from light to dark within each category.

• For example, start with white tops, then move through neutrals (beige, gray, black) and end with vibrant colors (red, blue, green).

Pro Tip: Use the rainbow as a guide—ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet)—to create a visually striking flow.

Step 4: Use the Right Tools

Good organization is all about the details.

Matching Hangers: Uniform hangers instantly make your closet look more organized and save space.

Storage Bins: Use bins or baskets for items like scarves, workout gear, or seasonal accessories.

Shoe Racks: A dedicated shoe rack keeps your footwear tidy and off the floor.

Drawer Dividers: Perfect for smaller items like socks, belts, and undergarments.

Step 5: Keep It Functional

Your closet should work for you, not against you.

Easy Access: Store your most-used items at eye level. Reserve higher or lower spaces for seasonal or rarely worn pieces.

Rotate Seasonally: Refresh your closet every few months to keep things current.

Pro Tip: Add a “Donation Bag” in your closet. As you notice items you no longer wear, toss them in the bag for your next decluttering session.

Step 6: Create a System That Lasts

Maintaining an organized closet is key to avoiding future chaos.

Adopt a One-In, One-Out Rule: For every new item you bring in, donate or sell an old one.

Regular Refresh: Dedicate 10 minutes each month to tidy and reassess your closet.

Why Organizing by Item and Color Works

For me, organizing my closet by item and then by color has been a game-changer. It’s like shopping my own wardrobe—everything is easy to see and access. Plus, it’s a joy to look at every time I open the door. This system works because it’s both practical and visually satisfying, making it easier to keep up with.

From Chaos to Closet Goals

A well-organized closet isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about making your life easier, your mornings smoother, and your outfits more intentional. By following these steps, you’ll not only create a space you love but also rediscover pieces you’ll be excited to wear.
