Cozy but Cool: Layering Formulas That Actually Work

There’s an art to fall layering — one that keeps you warm without hiding your personality. For me, it’s all about mixing textures, playing with proportions, and balancing cozy with cool. Whether I’m running errands or styling a look for content, these are my go-to outfit formulas that keep me comfy and collected, even when the weather’s moody. (You can find the links below!) Let’s get into it — here are 5 layering formulas that actually work (and how I make them feel like me).

1. Bodysuit + Mini Skirt + Oversized Blazer + Tights

The classic cool-girl combo. I love a ribbed or mock-neck bodysuit tucked into a pleated or printed mini. Add a structured blazer (bonus points if it’s vintage), sheer tights, and statement earrings. It’s polished but still playful.

Try this: Swap the tights for a patterned pair and go for knee-high boots if it’s extra cold.

2. Chunky Sweater + Slip Skirt + Tall Boots

The contrast of soft and sleek. I reach for slinky slip skirts in rich tones or subtle patterns and pair them with thick knits that add bulk up top. Tall boots complete the look without needing a full coat.

Stylist tip: Tuck just the front of your sweater to define your waist, or layer a cropped vest over it for extra interest.

3. Turtleneck + Denim Overalls + Cropped Jacket

This one’s perfect for chill days. A fitted turtleneck (bonus if it’s striped or ribbed) keeps it snug underneath. Throw on overalls — they’re cute and functional — and layer with a cropped corduroy or puffer jacket.

Make it you: Add fun earrings or a printed scarf to pull it together. I love mixing in a pop of color or pattern here.

4. Long Sleeve Dress + Shacket + Tights + Booties

For when I want something easy but styled. A long sleeve ribbed dress or sweater dress is comfy but structured. Add a shacket (shirt-jacket) or longline flannel, then layer up with tights and chunky booties.

Extra detail: Belt your shacket or add layered necklaces — small styling touches elevate the whole vibe.

5. Graphic Tee + Cardigan + Wide Leg Pants + Beanie

This one’s cozy and laid-back. A graphic tee tucked into wide leg trousers or corduroy pants, topped with an oversized cardigan. If it’s cold, I throw on a beanie or wrap a scarf for that “I didn’t try too hard” energy — even if I did.

My rule: Keep one item bold — like printed pants or bright earrings — and let the rest anchor it.

Final Thoughts:

Fall style doesn’t have to be bulky or boring. With the right base layers and a few statement pieces, you can stay warm without sacrificing your personal style. And the best part? These formulas work with both thrifted gems and what’s already in your closet.
